Korištenje resursa projekta FoodEducators u hrvatskim školama postalo je sjajan način da učenici na zabavan i praktičan način nauče o važnim temama poput odgovornog korištenja hrane. Jedan od primjera je i Međunarodni dan svjesnosti o gubitku i bacanju hrane, obilježen 26. rujna 2024. u Osnovnoj školi Braća Radić u Martinskoj Vesi. Škola je kroz razne aktivnosti, radionice i kvizove, pomogla učenicima razumjeti koliko je važno smanjiti bacanje hrane i očuvati okoliš.

Classroom teacher Danijela Bobinac and her 3rd-grade students, along with nature and biology teacher Paulina Pokas Požgajec and her 8th-grade students, as well as students from 5th to 8th grade, actively participated in conducting activities using FoodEducators resources.

Education through FoodEducators resources

During the project day, teachers used educational materials from the FoodEducators project, which brought students closer to the important economic, social, and environmental aspects of reducing food loss and waste. FoodEducators resources enabled students to engage with the issue of food loss and waste interactively, highlighting that food waste accounts for up to 30% of the total food produced annually, approximately 1.3 million tons.

Through various activities, students gained insight into important steps that can help reduce food waste, such as better meal planning, proper food storage, and responsible behavior toward food resources.

Activities and quizzes for active learning

FoodEducators activities are designed to bring students closer to the challenges that global society faces with the problem of food waste. Quizzes tested students’ knowledge of how they can contribute to waste reduction, while workshops offered an opportunity for creative thinking about everyday solutions.

Students responded positively to the activities during this project day. The activities included education on the environmental consequences of food waste, such as increased greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution, which further motivated students to change their behavior in daily life. Conclusion

Marking the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, with the support of the FoodEducators project, served as an important reminder of the seriousness of this issue. Through education and active student participation, the school emphasized how simple changes in daily habits can lead to a significant reduction in waste.
